Şekerpare

Şekerpare

Şekerpare is a traditional Turkish dessert often associated with celebrations, holidays, and guests visiting the home. It’s commonly served during religious holidays, family gatherings, and special occasions alongside Turkish tea or coffee. Many Turkish people connect şekerpare with childhood memories because it’s one of those classic homemade desserts mothers and grandmothers would prepare for visitors. Even though it can be found in bakeries, homemade şekerpare feels especially nostalgic and comforting. It represents hospitality and generosity, which are very important parts of Turkish culture. Şekerpare is one of the most classic homemade Turkish desserts soft, syrupy, comforting, and often made for family gatherings, holidays, and guests

Preparation:

20 minutes

Cook Time:

25-30 minutes

Cooling & Soaking Time: 1–2 hours

Total Time: About 2–3 hours

Servings

16–20 cookies (about 8–10 servings)

Ingredients:

For the dough:

  • 125 g butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar
  • 2 tablespoons semolina
  • 1 egg
  • 1 packet vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2–2.5 cups flour

For the syrup:

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2.5 cups water
  • A few drops of lemon juice 🍋

Optional topping:

  • Hazelnuts, almonds, or pistachios

Tips

  1. Do not overwork the dough. A soft dough creates a melt-in-your-mouth texture, while too much mixing makes the cookies dense and hard.
  2. Pour the syrup after baking at the correct temperature balance usually warm syrup over slightly cooled şekerpare. This helps the dessert absorb the syrup properly without becoming soggy.
    1. The syrup is made with sugar, water, and lemon juice. Semolina is commonly used in Turkish desserts and can usually be found in Middle Eastern, Mediterranean, or international grocery stores.

Preparation

  1. First, prepare the syrup.
Boil sugar and water for about 10 minutes, then add lemon juice. Let it cool completely.
  2. In a bowl, mix butter, powdered sugar, egg, semolina, vanilla, and baking powder.
  3. Slowly add flour until you get a soft dough.
  4. Shape into small oval cookies and place on a baking tray.
Press a hazelnut or almond on top if desired.
  5. Bake at 350°F (180°C) for about 25–30 minutes until golden.
  6. Pour the cold syrup over the hot şekerpare after baking.
  7. Let them absorb the syrup for a few hours before serving

Served and Paired With:

ŞEKERPARE is traditionally served with Turkish tea or Turkish coffee. The sweetness of the dessert pairs especially well with strong coffee because it balances the syrupy texture. It’s often enjoyed slowly during conversations with family or guests.
