Hjertevafler (Norwegian Heart Shaped Waffles)
In Norway, people enjoy waffles all year round, and especially on March 25, also known as Waffle Day. Norwegian waffles are unique from other waffles because they are thin, heart-shaped, often spiced with cardamom, and topped with sour cream and berries. If you want a truly authentic Norwegian topping, though, try to find some brunost or caramelized goat’s cheese–a deliciously sharp and sweet contrast to the soft waffles!
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 20 minutes
Servings: 5 waffles
Ingredients
Waffle Batter:
- 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 tsp cardamom (optional but recommended)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 2 large eggs
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 4 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
Toppings:
- Sour cream
- Sugar
- Lemon juice
- Fresh fruit
Other Toppings To Try:
- Jam
- Brunos
Preparation
- In a medium mixing bowl, whisk together the dry ingredients: flour, baking powder, salt, and cardamom.
- In a separate bowl, combine the wet ingredients: sugar, eggs, milk, vanilla extract, and melted butter. If your milk is cold from the fridge, heat it up slightly so it doesn’t cause the butter to re-solidify.
- Combine the wet and dry ingredients until everything is just combined. Don’t worry if there are a few lumps here and there!
- Follow the instructions for your waffle iron to preheat it. Once ready, add about half a cup of waffle batter, spread it out, and let it cook for about 3 mins (could be longer depending on your waffle iron) until the waffles are golden brown and cooked all the way through. Repeat until you are out of batter.
- To make a delicious topping, combine sour cream, lemon juice, and a bit of sugar to taste. Top with any fresh fruit you have and enjoy!
