Soft Cookies with Fig Filling. These particular cookies are Türkiye’s answer to Fig Newtons: a soft, chewy cookie surrounding a sticky fig filling (and made without any artificial flavoring!). Figs are believed to come from the Near East, an area that included both the Anatolia and Eastern Thrace regions of Türkiye. Evidence suggests that figs were being cultivated over 11 thousand years ago, making them the oldest domesticated fruit in the world. The cultivation of figs may even predate the cultivation of grains and legumes! Today, Türkiye is the world’s leading producer of both fresh and dried figs, and the sumptuous fruits remain an important part of the local cuisine. Figs are used to flavor Turkish delight, halva, and other classic Turkish desserts.
